Alfred von Tirpitz

Admiral (b.1849, d.1930)

Grossadmiral Alfred von Tirpitz was not buried near the sea. His tomb can be found in the Waldfriedhof in Munich, capital of the landlocked German state of Bavaria. Here the father of the Imperial German Fleet (he became Naval Secretary in 1897) and the instigator of unlimited U-boat warfare against ships in British waters during World War I lies buried between brewers, actors, painters and musicians. During World War II, the battleship named after him was sunk in a Norwegian fjord by British bombers and midget submarines.
